Abarth 205 Monza Berlinetta Vignale 1950

Carlo Abarth was deeply involved in the famous post-war Cisitalia project before he established his own company and it was the technology from these cars that formed the basis for his first own-branded model; the three examples 205 Coupé first shown at the Turin Motor Show in 1950. These cars had a Fiat sourced four cylinder unit fitted with Abarth tuning kit, which consisted of a revised intake manifold, two Weber carburettors and a bespoke exhaust system. On just 1089 cc the engine produced 83 hp. The four speed gearbox was also from Fiat and the power unit operated a simple box-section steel platform chassis.

Alfredo Vignale was commissioned to build the lightweight aluminium body which was styled by the prolific Giovanni Michelotti. A second example was finished shortly after the show and both were raced in the major Italian events that season. The third car was completed early in 1951 and was more luxuriously appointed for road use. Fitted with a slighthly larger four cylinder engine, it was shown at the Turin Motor Show in 1951 but the price at the time made it hard to sell.
